The Program

Real studio, real newsroom,
real broadcast.

Broadcasting at Miami Arts Studio 6–12 takes students through every technical and creative part of a career in television, film, social media and broadcast journalism: scriptwriting, camera, editing, sound mixing and recording, and puts those skills to work on short films, PSAs, commercials and a live newscast produced in the school’s own studio. Students run every position: producer, anchor, camera, audio, teleprompter, editor. A dedicated social media class carries the program to families through vertical storytelling and the @masmediahs account. Sophomores who publish regularly are eligible for the international Quill & Scroll Journalism Honor Society.

In four seasons the newsroom has placed at the state and national level across nearly every category it has entered:

What They Learn

Skills that travel.

Broadcasting teaches a trade, and the trade teaches everything around it. Students leave able to run a live show, and able to do the things a live show demands of a person.

6PTZ cameras

A six-camera PTZ rig at the Jose Milton Performing Arts Center

Students stream every show that comes through the house, for every magnet in the building. Band, vocal, dance, theatre, visual arts: if it happens on that stage, a MAS Media crew is calling the shots, running the cameras and pushing it out live. Real audiences, one take, no second chances.

Some of it turns into a career. All of it turns into someone who can walk into a room, work out what needs doing, and do it with other people.

The Faculty

Taught by people who
have done the job.

Broadcasting at Miami Arts Studio is led by three instructors who came to the classroom from working newsrooms, studios and stages.

Mr. Alejandro Gonzalez

Broadcasting Instructor

Alejandro Gonzalez has taught at Miami Arts Studio since 2018 and is in his ninth year with the broadcasting magnet. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Miami-Dade College in Exceptional Student Education and found his way into broadcasting through yearbook and writing, and he has taught sixth through twelfth grade ever since. In that time he has watched the program grow substantially and bring home countless awards at both the state and national level. More than any of that, though, he sees his job as being a teacher and a mentor to his students.

Partnerships

Who we make it with.

The program does not run on its own. These are the organizations that put students beside working professionals, on real sets and in real places, and the grant that pays for it.

The grant
Genius
Grant

A Genius Grant from the Helen Gurley Brown Foundation, awarded in recognition of transformative work at Everglades National Park and administered through and in partnership with the National Park Foundation, is what makes the three-way collaboration between the park, the After School Film Institute and MAS Media possible.

The foundation gives the award to individuals leading innovative work in youth empowerment, women’s leadership and conservation.

MAS Media Booster Club

The parents behind the program.

The MAS Media Booster Club, spearheaded by six parent representatives, is a dedicated group of parents and families committed to strengthening and supporting the MAS Broadcasting Program at Miami Arts Studio 6–12.

Our mission is to help provide students with the opportunities, resources, and experiences they need to grow their skills, creativity, confidence, and passion for media and broadcasting.

Through fundraising, community partnerships, volunteer support, and family involvement, the Booster Club helps purchase the equipment, technology, software and production resources that carry students beyond what a school budget covers, and that give them meaningful, hands-on experience.

Booster funds also cover convention travel and registration for STN and FSPA, the end-of-year awards night, and professional development for our students.

By working together with our broadcasting teachers, families, school and community, the MAS Media Booster Club helps ensure that students have the tools and opportunities to learn, create, communicate, and shine.

Every family in the program is welcome. Meetings, membership and volunteer opportunities are announced through the program and on @masmediahs.

To reach the board, email MASMediaBooster@mas612.com.
